Would you wear this watch for a job interview?

A few years ago, I was interviewed for a big consulting firm while I was still a student and wearing my Rolex Submariner 14060M. After a few minutes, the interviewer interrupted our conversation by saying “Oh so you have already succeeded in life”, pointing at my left wrist. He was making reference to Jacques Seguela, a French advertising agent, who once stupidly said “If you haven’t got a Rolex by the age of 50, then you have failed in life”. It wasn’t the first time that this interviewer tried to disturb me, probably to see how I would react to some kind of stress.

I was a bit surprised as my watch was hiding underneath my sleeve, with only a tiny bit of the winding crown being visible. I answered by telling him that I was a watch enthusiast and that I was proud of being able to save some money over the years before being able to buy this Submariner.

I knew my stuff on Rolex, I had no interest in what people could think of me wearing one and I was just happy with it.

It turns out that he was a watch guy too, this was probably explaining how he could spot my watch hidden in my sleeve and we ended up talking watches for at least half an hour. I was then moved on to the next recruiting steps, interviewing with all the partners and so on and they offered me the job which I finally refused as I had realized that the last place on Earth I wanted to work in was for a consulting firm. I guess that’s another story!

No one will ever judge you for wearing a watch in a job interview. Should this actually be the case, then probably you wouldn’t want to work there. On the other side, if you’re facing a watch guy, this might actually be a good way of starting a nice conversation which will never harm in the case of an interview. Finally, be yourself and wear what you feel like. The whole point of an interview is to see if there is a match between YOU and the company you’re interviewing for.
